I finally got to see Bubba since he broke his leg. I saw him on Saturday morning for a few hours. Was a GREAT visit. His birthday is actually the 15th and I probably wouldn't be able to see him that day. So Saturday was also my chance to give him his Birthday gift early.
I had been racking my brain for awhile trying to figure out what I would get him. Then it hit me on Wednesday what it was gonna be. I heard him mention probably a month ago that he had always wanted military dog tags. THAT'S IT! That is what I will get. I was off and on the hunt for these tags.
While living in Louisville, I remember going to an Army surplus store and they made dog tags, I actually went there to get an Army cap for Halloween. Which I never did end up wearing.
Anyway, I had to find a local Army Surplus store here, I figured surely they made them as well. Lucky me, there was one not to far from me, probably 3 minutes away.
I knew what I wanted to put on them. Full name, his Nickname "Bubba" and the date of birth. My real concern was getting the birth date right, specially the year. With a bit of research I was able to figure out what I thought was the correct year.
I was so excited about the idea. So I run to get them made, then I get them home and realize I don't have a gift box to put them in. CRAP! However, I came up with something better.
I thought to myself, this chain looks long enough to fit around my waist. Now all dog tags have a pretty standard size chain length. So these weren't extra long or anything. Just turns out I am that small. LOL So I try them on around my waist. AWESOME! They fit and not too tight either. Now I am really excited about the dog tags.
Bubba is going to be really tickled that his dog tags can fit around my waist. He likes how lean and small my waist and torso are to begin with.
On saturday I arrive at his place and eventually I tell him I will go change my clothes and get comfortable. I change into a black wife beater, Camouflage cargo shorts and was wearing a pair of ankle socks. I go back to the bedroom to the edge of the bed and tell him I am wearing his Birthday gift. He's like "Oh really, it actually fits?!" I was like "Yeah" but it's nothing you can see right now. I raise up my shirt and undo my cargo shorts a bit and reveal that I have a set of dog tags for him. He's grinning from ear to ear.
Turns out I did get the year wrong. But he wasn't worried about that. He said he likes that I got the year wrong. Also he said, he knows I put some effort into trying to find out what it was, but my source for doing so threw me off. He said the date mistake makes it more endearing, cause it will be a reminder that I "Tried" to surprise him and considering my source there was no way I was going to get it right. He thought it was sweet.
But, before I gave them to him I wanted to take some pictures with them on. of course in these pictures I am not wearing what I wore for him. The shorts and beater was last minute decision. I couldn't share these until now. I'm so happy he loves them. I'm also so happy I didn't go with my original idea.
Bubba has a broken leg but that didn't stop him from jumping Birdie before our visit was over!! Bubba's still got it!!
He has had them for awhile now though and he LOVES them! and that is an understatement! ;)
